Confusion over the term poplin often occurs because the meaning of the word poplin has changed over time. Today, the word generally refers to the weave, as described above. However, in the past the word poplin was used to describe a type of material which where the warp weave was silk and the weft weave was wool.
Going further back, the term poplin comes from the French word papelaine, which was a fabric made out of silk in the 15th century. The term papelain comes from the word papelino, which was the fabric made in Avignon in France in the 15th century, when a pope was based there.During that time, it was normally made of silk. But because of its material being expensive it has evolved to several materials which include cotton, wool and polyester.
This fabric is a strong fabric made in plain weave with crosswise ribs that gives its corded surface. Poplin made of cotton or wool is very suitable for winter wear. Meanwhile, polyester poplin because it is a softly texture wrinkle-resistant fabric with a beautiful draping quality, it is being used for event and promotions. The good thing about this polyester fabric is being wrinkle resistant. Moreover, most of this type of fabric is flame resistant and machine washable.
Polyester poplin is easy to handle and care. Machine wash in cold water. Machine dry at low temperature and remove as soon as the cycle is complete. If ironing is needed, use a moderately warm iron.
Poplin is also near-synonymous with broadcloth. The difference in broadcloth and poplin is that while Broadcloth uses all yarns of the same size, poplin cloths may use a different yarn size in the weft and warp.
