Single jersey is the most common knitted fabric, widely known as T-shirt fabric: on the right side small ‘V’-shaped stitches are visible, on the reverse side horizontal loops. It is most commonly made from 100% cotton or a cotton-polyester blend, with good moisture absorption and pleasant, skin-friendly feel. It is widely used as a base material for classic T-shirts, tops, pyjamas, underwear, baby and children’s clothing, and sportswear. It is recommended to pre-wash before sewing, as it may shrink 5–10% on the first wash. Its elastic version with elastane is stretch cotton jersey.
SINGLE JERSEY DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Single jersey cotton
Single jersey cotton is a cotton and polyester-based textile category that stands out for its simpler structural design and versatile usability. This narrower fabric group includes textiles that form a single-layer, uniform surface, making them suitable for various industrial and household purposes alike. Single jersey cotton typically appears in areas such as apparel base materials, home textile production, industrial wiping cloth manufacturing, decorative solutions or even healthcare use, where the material's functionality and handling are the primary considerations.
Composition and structural design
Single jersey cotton is made from a combination of cotton and polyester fibres. The presence of cotton can contribute to a more natural feel and more comfortable sensation, while the polyester increases the material's durability and resistance. This blended fibre composition allows the textile to be used more widely, under different levels of stress.
One of the most important characteristics of the structure is the single-layer design, meaning the material is made in a single layer, without a separate inner or outer layer. This results in a simpler construction and easier handling, which can be particularly advantageous for industrial or high-volume use. Its double-faced counterpart, smooth on both sides, is cotton interlock.
Material properties
The basic properties of single jersey cotton include good moisture absorption, which mainly comes from the cotton component. This is especially important for applications such as industrial wiping cloths or healthcare purposes. The presence of polyester contributes to the material's mechanical resistance, so the textile can better withstand regular use.
The textile is generally easy to handle, easy to cut and sew, which is an advantage for apparel and home textile use. The surface appearance is simpler, less structured, which allows it to be used for various purposes, either as a base material or as part of a finished product.
Applications
As an apparel base material, single jersey cotton can be suitable for making simpler garments, workwear elements or base layers. Due to its easy handling and mixed fibre composition, it can be well applied in various manufacturing processes. Ribbed trims for necklines and cuffs can be found in the cotton rib and ribbing fabric categories.
In home textile production, the material can be used, for example, to produce wiping cloths, cloths or other functional textiles. As an industrial wiping cloth, the combination of moisture absorption and durability can be particularly advantageous.
For decorative purposes, single jersey cotton appears as a simpler-looking but well-shapeable textile that can be used for various creative projects. For healthcare use, the textile can be applied in areas where moisture absorption and practical handling are important.
Considerations for choosing
When choosing single jersey cotton, it is worth considering the nature of the use, the degree of stress on the material, and the desired properties. For industrial use, durability and moisture absorption may be decisive, while for apparel purposes, comfort and handling may take precedence. For home textiles and decorative applications, appearance and shapeability may also be important considerations. If you need a more shape-retaining, elastic base material, stretch cotton jersey is the next step.
