Polar fleece is a synthetic textile made from 100% micropolyester fibres, processed on a knitted base and then mechanically brushed – typically on both sides. Its soft, fluffy surface provides good thermal insulation while the material is lightweight, flexible and quick-drying. It is widely used as a base material for sweaters, sweatshirts, waistcoats, hats, blankets, baby blankets and various craft projects, as it is easy to cut and does not fray when cut. Thanks to anti-pilling treatment, it durably maintains its soft, bobble-free surface. For similar products, take a look at the coral fleece fabrics as well.
POLAR FLEECE DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Polar fleece
Polar fleece is a synthetic textile material produced from polyester or micropolyester fibres. The higher-quality 100% micropolyester-based polar fleece textile has a lightweight structure, a soft feel and good thermal insulation properties. The characteristic feature of polar fleece is its fluffy, slightly fibrous surface, which provides a pleasant sensation while worn. The textile is widely used for making various apparel products, baby and children's products, home textiles, as well as craft base materials. Due to its structural properties and easy handling, polar fleece appears in many sewing and creative application areas.
Composition and structure
The base material of polar fleece is 100% micropolyester, made from fine, thin polyester fibres. These fibres are processed onto a knitted base and then brushed using a special mechanical process. During brushing, small, soft fibres form on the surface of the textile, which contribute to the material's warm sensation and pleasant feel. A double-sided finish is typically more common, meaning the fabric is brushed on both the face and the back side. One or both sides are subjected to an anti-pilling treatment to prevent bobbling.
The structure of the micropolyester fibres allows polar fleece to remain lightweight while retaining heat. The textile is generally more elastic than traditional woven materials, so it can provide comfortable wear for various garments. The surface of the material is smooth or slightly fluffy, depending on the type of polar fleece being made.
Material characteristics
Polar fleece has several properties that make it frequently used for making various textile products. The material made from micropolyester fibres is easy to handle, dries quickly, and in most cases does not require special maintenance.
- soft, fluffy surface
- good thermal insulation capacity
- lightweight and elastic textile structure
- quick drying
- easy to clean
- does not fray when cut
These properties are particularly useful for products where comfort, a soft feel and easy handling are important.
Applications
Polar fleece textile can be used in numerous different areas. In the apparel industry, it is often used for making jumpers, sweatshirt tops, waistcoats, hats or other warm garments. Due to the material's light weight and thermal insulation properties, it is particularly suitable for layered dressing. As a thermally insulating inner layer, it also appears in heavyweight softshell fabrics, beneath a windproof outer layer.
For baby and children's products, the soft surface and easy handling of polar fleece can be an important consideration. It is often used to make blankets, pram covers, sleeping bags or various accessories. For baby blankets, if an even softer feel is the goal, coral fleece may also come into consideration.
Polar fleece base material is also frequently found among home textiles. For example, it is used for making throws, decorative blankets or various decorative textiles. In addition, it is a popular base material for craft and hobby projects, since it is easy to cut and sew.
Material selection considerations
Several factors are worth considering when choosing polar fleece. These include the material's thickness, the degree of brushing, and the intended application area. For apparel purposes, thinner or medium-thickness polar fleece is often used, while thicker variants can also occur for home textiles. If you would like a denser, longer-pile surface for blankets, cozy fleece is closer to that.
Colour and surface design can also be important considerations. Polar fleece is made in many colours and patterns, allowing you to choose the appropriate variant for different projects. Both the lightweight transitional and the thick winter versions can be found among the fleece fabrics.
