Stretch brushed cotton (or elastic brushed French terry) is a textile that combines comfort, warmth and elasticity. In the abbreviation, “str.” comes from the English word “stretch”, referring to the material's stretchability. In this narrower fabric group, the surface design and structural characteristics play a defining role, particularly in terms of the feel and heat-retaining capacity resulting from the brushed character. Stretch brushed textiles appear in applications where the material contributes to the end result not only aesthetically but also functionally.
Composition and structural characteristics
Stretch brushed fabric is a cotton and spandex based textile, carrying the properties resulting from the combined presence of natural fibres and elastic components. The cotton content may be responsible for a softer feel and more comfortable sensation, while the spandex supports elasticity and the material's ability to change shape. Brushing is a structural process during which one side of the material is given a finely fibrous, raised structure, thereby increasing the thermal insulation effect. Without elastane, the same fabric is brushed cotton fleece.
The construction of the textile allows air to be better retained between the fibres, which can contribute to heat-retaining properties. This structural character is particularly important in applications where both thermal sensation and surface comfort play a role.
