Viscose jersey is made from regenerated cellulose fibre (viscose) and 5–8% elastane, known for its soft drape, silky sheen and cool feel. It breathes excellently, has better moisture absorption than cotton, and provides a cool sensation even in intense heat, making it one of the most popular base materials for summer clothing. It is an excellent choice as a base material for maxi dresses, flowing summer dresses, tunics, blouses, waterfall-neck tops, yoga trousers and premium pyjamas. Pre-washing is required before sewing as it may shrink, and a fine stretch needle is recommended for processing. Among woven fabrics, its counterpart is linen fabric.
VISCOSE JERSEY DETAILED DESCRIPTION
Viscose jersey
Viscose jersey is a viscose, viscose-polyester and spandex based fabric category, created by combining naturally-derived base materials with synthetic fibres. This narrower fabric group includes textiles that offer a soft feel, good drape and a more elastic structural behaviour. Viscose appears in various application areas, such as an apparel base material, for making wiping cloths, in healthcare textiles or for furniture upholstery, where comfort and practical usability are both important.
Composition and structural characteristics
The basis of viscose is the viscose fibre, known as a cellulose-based, regenerated fibre. This is combined with polyester, which increases the material's durability and resistance, and spandex, which provides elasticity. This combination results in balanced properties, so the textile can be soft, easy to handle and elastic at the same time. On a purely synthetic base, the same role is filled by polyester jersey.
The structure generally results in a smooth-surfaced textile with good drape, which easily follows shapes. The presence of spandex helps the material's recovery, while the polyester stabilises the structure.
Material properties
One of the most important characteristics of viscose is its silky feel and good drape. Viscose fibres are made from a natural base material, so the fabric can provide a pleasant sensation in contact with the skin. The presence of polyester increases abrasion resistance, while spandex gives the textile elasticity. If the emphasis is on a cottony, matte feel, stretch cotton jersey is the obvious choice.
The textile can have good moisture-absorbing properties, which is particularly advantageous for wiping cloths and healthcare applications. In addition, the material is easy to handle and adapts well to different usage environments.
Applications
For apparel use, viscose can be suitable for making various garments where a pleasant drape and comfortable wear are important. The more elastic structure contributes to a better fit. For summer garments with a soft drape, linen fabric has a similar character; being woven, it stretches less.
For wiping cloths, the material's moisture-absorbing capacity and soft surface can be advantageous, especially for applications where surface-friendly cleaning is important.
For healthcare textiles, viscose can be used in areas where comfort, moisture absorption and handling play a key role. For furniture upholstery, the material's aesthetic appearance and shape retention can be decisive.
Considerations for choosing
When choosing viscose, it is worth considering the material's drape, elasticity and the nature of use. For apparel purposes, feel and comfort; for wiping cloths, moisture absorption; while for furniture upholstery, durability and appearance can be important considerations. For healthcare use, practical handling and softness come to the fore. For occasion garments, where the sheen of the surface also matters, crinkle silk offers a similarly soft drape.

Frequently asked questions
What is viscose used for?
Viscose can be used as an apparel base material, for making wiping cloths, for healthcare textiles and for furniture upholstery.
What does viscose fabric feel like?
Viscose generally has a soft, silky feel, which provides a comfortable sensation.
Is this material elastic?
Yes, thanks to the spandex content, the material is more elastic, so it adapts better to shapes.
Is it suitable for making wiping cloths?
Yes, due to its moisture-absorbing capacity, it can also be suitable for manufacturing wiping cloths.
