Tpu laminated waterproof fabric

Tpu laminated waterproof fabric

Tpu laminated waterproof fabric is made with a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) layer bonded to a polyester base, which generally provides higher water resistance than traditional PU coating – the film is a fixed layer that does not wear off over time. The breathable property of the TPU membrane allows body moisture to escape while preventing wind and moisture from entering from outside – the exact performance depends on the quality of the TPU film. It does not crack in cold weather and remains soft. It is used as a base material for premium sports and hiking clothing, rain jackets, ski wear, mattress protectors, incontinence sheets, waterproof backpacks and washable nappy covers (PUL fabrics). Available in transparent, coloured or printed versions, it is a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional PVC-coated textiles.

TPU LAMINATED WATERPROOF FABRIC DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Water-repellent fabric with TPU film

Welcome to the world of functional fabrics! In this category, the water-repellent fabric is not coated with PU material, but laminated with a special TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) film layer, which is not only aesthetic but also resistant to moisture and environmental effects. The TPU film layer generally means a higher waterproofing grade than the PU-coated water-repellent fabric, developed specifically for protection against moisture and durability. The water-repellent coating can be widely used in apparel, outdoor furniture, tent making and workwear manufacturing, where protection against environmental effects is of primary importance.

Composition and layer system

The water-repellent TPU film is built on a polyester carrier material, to which a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) layer is bonded. The polyester provides the stable base and mechanical resistance, while the TPU film forms a flexible, water-repellent layer on the surface.

The TPU coating is generally thin but forms a continuous layer, which reduces water penetration into the material's structure. The design of the layer system allows the material to retain its flexibility while providing functional protection.

The TPU coating can be transparent, but can also be coloured or even printed.

Material properties

One of the most important characteristics of the water-repellent TPU film is the surface water-repellent effect, which prevents moisture from being immediately absorbed. The TPU layer is flexible, so the material remains bendable and shapeable, which is particularly important for dynamic use.

The polyester carrier increases durability and tensile strength, while the TPU coating contributes to the material's imperviousness. The textile is lightweight, easy to handle, and can be laminated or integrated onto various surfaces.

Applications

Premium sports and trekking apparel: Softshell jackets, raincoats, ski wear and technical trousers. The same TPU membrane is also found in the middle layer of heavyweight softshell.

Healthcare and hygiene textiles: Mattress protectors, incontinence sheets (since TPU blocks liquid penetration while remaining breathable).

Hard-wearing accessories: Waterproof backpacks, bicycle bags, laptop cases.

Baby and mother products: Washable nappy outer shells (PUL materials), changing mat liners. For an absorbent inner side, TPU film is often combined with terry fabric.

Considerations for choosing

When choosing a water-repellent TPU film, it is worth considering the layer thickness, the degree of flexibility and the intended environment of use. For apparel applications, comfort and freedom of movement, for upholstery, durability, and for industrial use, the level of protection and mechanical resistance may be decisive. It may also be an important consideration how the material is used, for example laminated or as a standalone layer.

Why choose TPU film textiles?

Stronger waterproofing: While simple coatings can wear off over time, the TPU film is a fixed layer that stops moisture even under high water column pressure. For comparing water column and moisture vapour transmission values, our softshell help page provides guidance.

Breathable function: One of the biggest advantages of the TPU membrane is that while it keeps water out, it can let water vapour (perspiration) through, thus avoiding the "plastic-bag effect".

Flexibility and softness: Unlike traditional PVC coatings, the TPU film remains soft, does not crack even in cold weather, and follows the material's movement.

Eco-friendly alternative: TPU biodegrades more easily and releases fewer harmful substances during production than traditional plastic coatings.

Wind resistance: Provides a perfect barrier against wind, making it an ideal technical apparel base material.

Frequently asked questions

What is the water-repellent TPU film used for?

The water-repellent TPU film can be used in apparel, upholstery, sports equipment manufacturing and industrial coatings.

Is the material completely waterproof?

The TPU film can have water-repellent and partly waterproof properties, but complete waterproofing depends on the specific design.

How flexible is the TPU coating?

The TPU layer is flexible, so the material adapts well to bending and movement.
